  • Time: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Location: Hybrid (Newman Multipurpose Room and Zoom)
  • Guest: Sam Buchanan
  • Description: In this interactive session, Sam Buchanan will lead attendees in a professional development planning process. For newer practitioners, the session will also include a few minutes of discussion on professional development opportunities on campus and beyond; however, it is our hope that this session will provide opportunities for reflection and growth for both new and established practitioners on campus.
Please note: The presenter is most comfortable with and interested in presenting this session in-person. However, to increase accessibility, we invite you to join via Zoom and we will record this session as we are able. If you join via Zoom, your experience will be different from those who attend in-person.

Intersectionality and the College Experiences of Underrepresented Students

  • Guests: Dr. Tonisha Lane and student panelists
  • Description: This dual-pronged advising chat will begin with a presentation by Dr. Tonisha Lane, a professor of higher education at Virginia Tech. Dr. Lane will discuss how students' intersecting identities play a role in their experiences on a college campus. Through the lens of intersectionality, Dr. Lane will highlight how practitioners can best support students in their advising work. Following the presentation, a group of student panelists will share their own experiences at Virginia Tech before beginning a participatory question and answer portion.

Supporting Students who have Experienced Trauma and Practitioner Self-Care through the Process

  • Date: Thursday, December 1, 2022
  • Time: 2:00 - 3:00 PM
  • Location: Virtual (Zoom only; this session will NOT be recorded)

The Virginia Tech Women's Center will lead this session to highlight how practitioners can support students who have experienced trauma, and how practitioners can also take care of their own mental health as they navigate these interactions.
